7 Ideas for Summer Weddings
Wedding season is well and truly upon us, and if you’re lucky enough to be tying the knot this summer, you might be thinking about ways to make your wedding stand out from the crowd. Here’s some food for thought…
1. An outdoor ceremony
What could be more romantic than becoming husband and wife in the picturesque surroundings of a beautifully manicured garden? While UK marriage law states that you have to be married beneath a fixed, licensing structure, there are plenty of ways venues have got round this to enable you to marry in the great outdoors – think rose-covered arbours, evocative orangeries and atmospheric ruins.
2. Pimm’s as your reception drink
While Champagne or sparkling wine may be the tradition, Pimm’s works beautifully as an alternative summer wedding reception drink for guests to sip immediately after you’ve said your vows. Not only is it delicious and refreshing, but the colourful combination of fruits will look delightfully summery.
3. Bright bouquets
You’ll find bright blooms to match whatever colour scheme you choose if you’re getting married in the summer months. Beautiful blue cornflowers and delicately perfumed freesias are popular choices, while lavender adds a rustic touch to country weddings. If you wanted to be really bold and summery, it’s also the season for sunflowers.
4. Garden Games
Keep your guests occupied between your ceremony and reception by setting out some giant garden games that adults and children alike will enjoy playing. Classics like giant jenga and snakes and ladders are sure to go down well, or you could even get a coconut shy for some old-fashioned fairground fun.
5. Hire an ice cream van or trike
A hot summer’s day would be incomplete without ice cream, so why not inject some fun into your wedding day by hiring an ice cream van? Even better, get hold of an old-fashioned ice cream trike to serve frozen treats to your guests.
6. Light up the evening
There’s no reason to head indoors as the sun goes down. A summer wedding is a perfect excuse to keep the party going outside, and nothing creates a whimsical summer evening atmosphere like strings of fairy lights hanging in the trees. Tealights in mason jars work well at the base of trees and marking out pathways. It may not be possible in every venue, but some venues, like Cripps Barn, even have fire pits where your guests can toast marshmallows and share fireside stories.
7. Look after your guests
A sunny day is what everyone wants for their wedding day, but with guests dressed up in their wedding finery, the summer heat can also spell discomfort. Keep your guests cool and hydrated by having plenty of jugs or bottles of refreshing iced water or lemonade dotted around the venue throughout the day. You could even provide a basket of parasols for guests to borrow if there’s nowhere shady for them to retreat out of the sun.
Finally, don’t forget to hire a chauffeur to make sure you arrive at your beautiful summer wedding venue in style.
