The Best Gigs In & Around Oxfordshire 2019
It’s that time again where we start to see an influx of global talent grace our stages in and around Oxfordshire, and this year is as good as any we’ve seen in a long time (and we thought last year was going to be tough to beat, see below).
As per usual Blenheim Palace seems to have the pick of the superstars and, lets face it, quite possibly the best venue in the country to host them! So who should you be snapping up tickets for? Well the Nocturne Live events (as they are referred to) have outdone themselves this year.
Ms. Lauryn Hill – 20th Anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauren Hill Tour
When Lauryn Hill announced she would be touring the UK this year they instantly became the most sought after tickets around. Officially the she started last year in the US but is finally on the worldwide leg of her first solo tour for years. This is a real coup for Blenheim as the only other dates she will be doing in the UK after this are at the big festivals, headlining Glastonbury being the highlight.
Providing support for Ms. Hill will be the incredibly talented, and award winning Laura Mvula, whose 2013 album ‘Sing to the moon’ received critical acclaim and featured the huge hit ‘Green Garden’ which catapulted her to global fame. Quite likely this will have been how the previously unheard of British artist came to the attention of the former Fugee’s star.
Worth the ticket price alone in our book, but that isn’t all! Mahalia is also on the support duty and this is one young starlet who is certainly going places. At just 21 years old her debut album dropped this year and has earned her a Brit nomination, Youtube’s ‘One To Watch’ award and numerous other plaudits. How did Lauryn Hill come across her if her debut album has only just been released I here you cry? The album was long overdue, this young has been signed to the prestigious Atlantic Records since she was 13!! Being one of the most trusted and respected Chauffeurs in Oxfordshire we will happily take you to and from the Palace ladies if you happen to be reading this!
Kylie Minogue is back!
For any of you unlucky enough to miss her visit to Blenheim Palace last year, she is back to rock the foundations yet again. Said to be one of her favourite venues to play at you can be sure to the tiny pop princess belt out a choice selection of her, lets face it, incredibly extensive and varied back catalogue, along with tracks from her latest album ‘Golden’. Tickets are going quickly for the pint sized pop princess so make sure you bag a couple (or more) here.
Tears For Fears
Shout! Shout! Let it all out! Yes that’s right, the 80’s legends Tears For Fears are gracing Blenheim Palace with their presence this summer with a show which is show to please even the most ‘casual’ of fans. Not the biggest name on the list but with their live shows famed for being epic in their scale this is one that shouldn’t be missed. Bag your tickets here and prepare to get LOUD.
Gladys Knight, Gabrielle & Kathy Sledge
Time to dust off your disco attire and get your groove on with this last show stopper. Soul brothers and sisters unite for one night of silky smooth vocals and throbbing bass as Oxfordshire welcomes some of the finest female vocalists to grace the stage. We’ve already bagged our tickets for this one so don’t sleep on it or you’ll be sadly disappointed. From just £35 you are looking at an absolute bargain as the ticket price to see any one of these as a solo acts will close to that figure!
As mentioned 2018 was also a great year for seeing some of the entertainment industry’s biggest acts on tour. Here was our pick of some of the best gigs. Which did you make it to?
Britney Spears: Piece of Me
Normally to be found gracing the stage of the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Britney Spears is taking her ‘Britney: Piece of Me’ show on tour. Coming to the UK for the first time in seven years and supported by the American rapper Pitbull, she performed a series of hugely anticipated gigs in locations including Brighton, Manchester, London and Birmingham.
Elton John: Farewell Yellow Brick Road
Another Vegas favourite announced his last ever tour last year. If you’ve always wanted to see Elton John perform live, his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour was your last chance, because the star is retiring. Starting in September 2017, you could of jetted off to the US to see him perform in one of the numerous locations Stateside, if this wasn’t an option we hope you managed to catch him on the return leg.
Taylor Swift: Reputation
Promoting her new album ‘Reputation’, Taylor Swift came to the UK in June 2018. Supported by Charli XCX and Camila Cabello, the tour had Friday and Saturday gigs on consecutive weekends at Premier League Champions (and potential quadruple winners this year) Manchester City’s home turf at the Etihad Stadium, she then went on to smash Dublin’s Croke Park and London’s Wembley Stadium in June.
Kylie’s last UK tour was to promote her album ‘Golden’ with a show that promised new songs and many of the old favourites alike. The tour kicked off in London and Manchester on 13 and 14 March, with further dates in Newcastle, Nottingham and Birmingham from 18 to 21 September. If you missed her then, you have a second chance, don’t miss it!
Bill Bailey: Larks in Transit
If pop music isn’t your cup of tea, you might have headed out for a good belly laugh courtesy of the man, the legend, the ‘human slave of an insect nation’ (if you know, you know) Bill Bailey. ‘Larks in Transit’ is described on the comedian-musicians website as “a compendium of travellers’ tales and the general shenanigans of twenty years as a travelling comedian” – with plenty of “musical virtuosity” and “an excruciating encounter with Paul McCartney” thrown in. The show started in Coventry on 29 January, and there were 95 dates until it finished in High Wycombe on 16 June. We managed to snap up some tickets for the Oxford leg. It. Was. Incredible.
Derren Brown: Underground
Finally, something a little different. If loud gigs aren’t your cup of tea, Derren Brown’s tour was also aa highlight for those seeking something different. It ran from 3 April to 5 July at venues around the UK, ‘Underground’ promised “a jaw-dropping experience of magical genius” based on all the illusionist’s favourite work. It definitely delivered, if you missed him, not to worry! He has a number of live shows on Netflix so have a look here and marvel at his talent keep your eyes peeled for any further tour dates on his website here.
