Last-minute Easter getaway inspiration
The Easter holidays are almost upon us, and if you’ve still not made plans, it’s not too late to organise a last-minute getaway. Today we’re sharing our favourite Easter destinations to give you some inspiration.
As the centre of the Catholic faith, Rome unsurprisingly makes a big deal of Easter. Although the influx of pilgrims means it’ll be even busier than usual, it’s a special time in the Eternal City and one that’s marked with an assortment of parades and atmospheric religious services at the Vatican and Rome’s countless other churches. Delis full of Easter eggs add extra charm to springtime in this ever-captivating city, where the weather is starting to warm up to a pleasant temperature that makes for much more comfortable exploring than the searing summer heat.
Another perfect combination of culture and sunshine is Malta, a Catholic country where Easter is celebrated in earnest with parades and other festivities. While the mood on Good Friday is more sombre, the joyous celebrations on Easter Sunday are sure to lift the spirits, with the sounds of church bells and local bands ringing through the streets. Don’t leave without trying figolla – special Easter biscuits filled with delicious almond paste.
You can’t go far wrong with a sunny escape to the Canary Islands, where the opportunities for fun in the Easter sun are endless. Head to Tenerife to climb Mount Teide or let the kids splash about in the water park. Alternatively, experience a quieter side to the Canaries on La Gomera, just 50 minutes from Tenerife by ferry but the world away from the tourist hustle. If you opt for this more authentic taste of Canarian life for your Easter break, don’t miss the views from the Mirador de Abrante, which has a magnificent glass floor jutting out from the clifftops.
The Lake District
For stunning scenery a little closer to home, the Lake District fits the bill perfectly. It may be a little late to see Wordsworth’s daffodils at their cheerful best, but there’s always lots on over the Easter period. Whether you’re travelling with kids who want to spend their weekend doing Beatrix Potter-inspired Easter egg hunts, or you’re a couple looking for a romantic escape with plenty of great foodie destinations, the Lake District has all the ingredients of the ideal UK-based Easter break.
If you’d rather venture somewhere further afield, April is a wonderful time to visit Japan. Although Easter itself isn’t celebrated by the primarily Shinto and Buddhist population, it’s a delightful springtime destination for other reasons, chief among which is the arrival of the country’s famed cherry blossom season. The blossom – known as sakura – is greatly loved by the Japanese, who celebrate its delicate beauty with parties beneath the cherry trees as temperatures get warmer. If you can manage the spontaneity of a last-minute trip, the longer flight is definitely worth it.
